Kinabalu Park Safari

Day 1

Meet your Guide in the hotel lobby at 0830 hrs. Drive 2 hours overland through padi fields and Dusun villages over the ridges of the Crocker Range to the foothills of Mt Kinabalu - the highest mountain in South East Asia.

En route you will get a chance to photograph the mountain from a number of angles (ask the driver to stop for you!) and also to visit a local market at Nabalu village, located near the base of the mountain, to savour local fruits and to bargain prices for the handicrafts.

At Kinabalu Park World Heritage Site, visit the Education Centre and Mountain Garden,home to some of the 24 species of flowering Rhododendrons, 10 species of carnivorous pitcher plants, an estimated 1400 species of orchids, over 600 species of ferns, 40 species of oak trees and over 300 species of birds.

Night temperature at the park is around 14 - 25 degrees C. If time and weather permits, take a guided walk on one of the trails in the cool surrounding to observe the montane forest. Overnight in Kundasang, or alternatively, at Hill Lodge near Kinabalu Park Headquarters (at a surcharge - refer to price schedule, below). [includes lunch and dinner]

Day 2

After breakfast, proceed by road to Poring, which lies about 40 km East of the park, at an altitude of about 450 metres. Explore tropical lowland rainforest and the jungle trail leading up to the treetop canopy walkways, suspended up to 41 metres above the forest floor between giant Mengaris trees.

Visit Kipungit Waterfall and soak in hot sulphur pools. Proceed to Kundasang Memorial Park to learn part of Sabah's World War II history.

The Memorial takes the form of a walled garden and it was built to honour all those who died on the death marches of the Second World War. The tragedy saw the loss of 2,500 prisoners-of-war (1,800 Australian and 700 British soldiers) between January to April 1945, as they marched from Sandakan to Ranau, a distance of 240 km. Only six escaped with the help of locals and survived the torturous trek across mountainous and forested terrain.

Return to Kota Kinabalu and your hotel in the mid-afternoon. [includes breakfast and lunch]
