Originally known as Prince of Wales Island, Penang was where Francis Light, under the auspices of the East India co in 1786, claimed it as the first British possession of the Malay States and South East Asia.

The early settlement was established around the harbour with Fort Cornwallis forming the island's defence.

Visit the Penang Museum for an insight of the island's past to get to what it is today. Look at the Chinese houses on stilts, built to avoid paying taxes at that time. Walk along Little India to see how they had survived in their trades of yester-year and thrive today in the modern world. The Peranakan Museum unfolds the lifestyle of the Baba/Nonya found only in the Straits Settlements that comprised of Penang, Malacca and Singapore around 1832. Visit the Khoo Kongsi, one of the most distinctive Chinese clan associations in Malaysia.

Temple Tour

Penang's multi-culture gives rise to the variety of places of worship with its harmonious blend of Thai, Burmese and Chinese architecture. Here is an opportunity to marvel at a floating mosque, the site of the Tsunami disaster of December 2004, next, the 4th longest Reclining Buddha in the world, followed by the Dhammikarama Burmese Buddhist Temple. Travel down to the city and visit one of the oldest and most popular Chinese temples, Kuan Yin Temple, built in 1800 by early immigrant settlers from China. The Sri Mahamariamman Temple, built in 1833, is the oldest Hindu temple in Penang.

Mangrove Forest and Bukit Merah

Journey southwards by road to the state of Perak, stopping at Kuala Sepetang, which used to be the gateway for cargo ships carrying tin ore in 1877, but now mainly used by fishing boats. Stop at the mangrove forest of Matang, the largest stretch of coastal mangrove. A visit to the charcoal factory enables you to see how the bakau trees are processed into charcoal that we will later use for our barbecue.Then proceed to Bukit Merah to see the welfare of the Orang-utan on Orang-utan Island. An hour at the Water Theme Park provides the thrill of wet and wild activities.

Garden and Penang Hill Tour

Take a stroll along the 32 ha Botanical Garden, established in 1884, originally an old granite quarry which was cleared and converted into a nursery for planting pepper, cloves and other spices of the East. Today, it is the stomping ground for young and old alike. At times the long-tailed Macaque can be found and occasionally, the SilverLeaf Monkey can be spotted high in the trees above enjoying the juicy leaves.
