Garama Wetland Jungle Experience

Klias River

You will be picked up from your hotel in the early afternoon - at approximately 13.00 hrs. Your journey begins here, passing through padi fields, small kampungs (village) and oil palm plantations. Your destination is the Garama/ Klias Wetlands, some 25 km south of Beaufort, which is itself located about 2 hrs South of Kota Kinabalu. The wetlands are found on the Klias Peninsula, in a beautiful environment of rivers, mangrove forest and sago palms, and is a Mangrove Forest Reserve.

There is an abundance of mangrove trees in the Klias Wetland Peninsula. This wetland forest is enriched with vegetation and wildlife such as long tail macaques, silver leaf monkeys, crocodiles, otters, fireflies and many species of birds, including the kingfisher, eagle, hornbill, grey heron, and white heron. This is also home to the unique proboscis monkey (Nasalis Larvatus), endemic only to Borneo.

Tour boats on the Klias River

The cruise starts at 16.00 hrs, and it is a boat tour of around 2 hours duration. The tour will take you into the wetlands. Soon, you will see monkeys and other wildlife in and around the trees. As your small open boat drifts past the mangroves, groups of these amazing primates make their way to the river bank before settling down for the evening.

This is a wonderful opportunity to watch these primates in the wild as dusk falls. Upon return, witness the glittering fireflies on the nearby trees.

Dinner is provided before returning to Kota Kinabalu where you will be dropped off at your hotel.
