KAYAKING ON THE MAHAKAM RIVER

Day 1

AIRPORT - LOA JANAN - MAHAKAM RIVER

You will be met on arrival at Balikpapan's Sepinggan airport, and transfer immediately to Loa Janan on the lower Mahakam River, where you will board a comfortable house boat for exciting tour on the Mahakam River which is like a multi-lane highway to the interior of Kalimantan, complete with many riverside towns and floating road houses.

Day 2

MUARA MUNTAI - MANCONG - UPSTREAM MAHAKAM

After breakfast on boat, you will make a stop at Muara Muntai, a town of the Kutai people, to enable you to observe the way of the inhabitants as they go about their life in this town with streets and footpaths made of hardwood planks. Continue the trip by motorized canoe over Jempang Lake, passing beautiful scenery along the river banks, passing the beautiful panorama of the smaller Ohong River where you can observe proboscis monkeys in the trees by the river, kingfishers, monitor lizards as well as a variety of other wildlife. On arrival at Mancong you will receive a traditional dance welcome ceremony which will be performed for you by the local Benuaq Dayak people in front of their ceremonial longhouse. After the performance and an inspection of the village, return to the house boat. Picnic Lunch box, dinner and overnight on the boat.

Day 3

MELAK - TERING

Breakfast on boat. You will then be transferred by Kijang to visit the Black Orchid plantation. You will also be able to do a short trek to see the huge mahogany trees. Visit the communal longhouse of the Eheng Peles and observe their daily activities and the ritual Benuaq style coffin.

Proceed by road to Tering, where you will stop for the night. Meals at a local restaurant.

Day 4

TERING - DATAH BILANG - LONG BAGUN

Breakfast at a local restaurant. Visit the Bahau tribe women with their long ear lobes. Watch the traditional Bahau tribe ceremony as well as the Hudoq dance (mask dance). Proceed from the village by canoe or longboat to the Punan tribe at Rukun Damai and Long Bagun. You will make a stop at Datah Bilang to see the beautiful ornaments of the longhouse and the people of the Kenyah tibe - also with long earlobes. From there, head further along the river ot Long Bagun. Meals and accommodation at a local losmen/guest house.

Day 5

LONG BAGUN - RAPIDS AT LONG TUYUQ

Breakfast at a local restaurant, then along the river using a public long boat or speed boat to pass the wild rapids of the Mahakam River - Riam Udang, Keneche Rapid, Panjang Rapids, Gap and Halo Rapids. You will see the beautiful waterfalls on both sides of the river, as well as the huge rocks and the amazing landscape. On arrival at Long Tuyuq you will proceed to Long Panghai. Overnight at a local losmen.

Day 6

LONG PANGHAI - LONG BAGUN - TERING - MELAK

Breakfast at your losmen. Head down the river by public speed boat to Long Bagun. From there, you will head to Tering and on to Melak. A stop will be made at Melak losmen. Meals and accommodation at the losmen.

Day 7

MELAK - KOTA BANNGUN - BALIKPAPAN

Breakfast at the losmen, then down the river by speed boat to Kota Bangun. You will be transferred from there to either the Bahana Surya Hotel or the Benakutai Hotel in Balikpapan.

Day 8

BALIKPAPAN - KRUS

After breakfast, you will go sightseeing at nearby Krus to see the orang-utans. Some of the orang-utan are are free to range, while some of the orang-utan remain caged. Visit Samarinda and do some shopping for precious stones including jade, emerald, ruby and amethyst.

Return to your hotel in Balikpapan. Along the way, a stopover will be made at the canopy walkway in the rainforest.

Day 9

HOTEL - AIRPORT

Breakfast at hotel, morning at leisure until your transfer to the airport for your flight to the next destination.
