is a minimum two day trip, and will usually be done as a three day
trip! (Tour Code KKA1)

accommodation for the first night will be in a twin bed cabin or similar.

the Timpohon Gate at an altitude of 1800 m from where the trek actually
begins. From here you will then climb to Laban Rata Resthouse at an altitude
of 3353 m, where you will spend part of the night.
Day Three begins at 03.00 hrs when you begin the
ascent to the summit, where you should arrive at dawn to experience the
glorious sunrise (weather permitting).
Sunrise on Mount Kinabalu |
It is possible that the trip to the summit could
be completed in two days, however, we would need to determine this possibility
at the time you make your booking. You would not, however, have the time
to visit the Educational Centre prior to commencing your climb, and would
be completely at the discretion of the mountain guides.
The cost for this trip includes your permit, entrance
fees, certificate, mountain guide fee, climbers' insurance, accommodation
and transfers. The rooms at Laban Rata Resthouse are dormitory style with
electric heaters. A local non-English speaking guide is compulsory on all
climbs. We will advise you at the time of booking of the necessary clothing
and other articles which you should bring with you for the trip.
Take the Train from Beaufort |
Beaufort Train and Padas Gorge - Beaufort
lies about 1 hour to the South of KK and is the terminal for the last remaining
train in Sabah. The train trip plies the route from Beaufort to Tenom through
the Padas Gorge beside the mighty Padas River. The trip passes by tropical
rainforest, rubber estates, and villages along the river.
(Tour Code KK2)
Note that this tour cannot be offered at present due
to a change in train schedules. We are hopeful that it may be possible to run
the tour again later in the year.
Padas River from the Train |
The Padas River is also the site of some of
the best whitewater rafting to be found in Borneo. A rafting trip along
the river will allow you approximately 2 hours of exhilarating adventure,
shooting rapids with names such as Headhunter Padas Cyclone, Cobra Rock,
Roller Coaster and Jacuzzi Pool). The rapids are classified to Grade 4.
(Tour Code KKA2)
Slipper Orchid |
Tenom - Tenom is the starting point for the
30 km trip to the Orchid Centre at Lagud Sebrang. The Orchid Centre is
home to over 600 species of orchids, many of them native to the area, others
endangered to the region. Also in the vicinity is the "Living Crop Museum"
which features tropical fruit and beverage trees and other crops from all
over the world.
Rafflesia Flower |
Tambunan Rafflesia Centre - The largest flower
in the world can be found at the Rafflesia Centre which is located approximately
60 km from KK, and is the most likely place to see the Rafflesia flower
in bloom. Even if no flowers are open, you will certainly find some Rafflesia
buds. The trip to Tambunan takes you over the ridges of the Croker Range.
Menkabong Water Village - the
village is made up of thatched roof houses built on stilts over the water,
and connected by narrow plank walkways. The village is home to the Bajau
fishermen and is located about 40 km North of KK. You will be able to explore
the village on foot, before proceeding to Tuaran to visit a local market.
Before returning to your hotel in KK, you will also be able to visit a
local pottery centre.
Rungus Longhouse -
Matunggung lies about 150 km North of KK, over the Croker Range, and past
Kota Belud in the Kudat Distract, which is the heart of the Rungus people.
The Rungus are one of Sabah's most colourful and traditional ethnic groups.
A full day trip will allow you to witness their unique lifestyle and mingle
with them inside the longhouse, where the women wear the traditional sarongs
and 30 cm long bracelets. On Sundays, you will also visit the fabulous
Kota Belud Tamu (market) and buffalo market. An overnight stay in the longhouse
can also be arranged if desired. (Tour Code KK6)
Kota Belud Tamu -
A full day tour to Kota Belud Tamu. An exciting 2-hr journey brings you to the home of the legendary
"Cowboys of the East", the indigenous Bajaus of Kota Belud. The Bajaus are often called "Sea
Gypsies" because they were once fearless sailors. Now, very much settled on the land, the Bajaus
are expert horsemen rearing ponies, buffaloes and cattle as well as being rice farmers.
At Kota Belud, witness the fascinating and colourful weekly street market or bazaar called "Tamu".
Watch people confer and exchange gossip while selling their wares before
returning to Kota Kinabalu in the afternoon. Note that the tour runs on Sunday only (Tour code KK7)
Borneo Rainforest Lodge -
Although not strictly a trip which is located close to KK, it is most easily
accessed by a direct flight from KK to Lahad Datu on the East Coast of
Sabah, to the South of Sandakan. It is also possible to drive from Sandakan,
however, the quickest and most comfortable means of accessing the area
is by air from KK.
Canopy Walkway near Borneo Rainforest Lodge |
The lodge is located beside the Danum River approximately
85 km from Lahad Datu on the edge of about 450 square km of undisturbed
lowland rainforest. The area around the lodge is home to a full range of
Sabah's lowland fauna, including the rare Sumatran Rhinoceros, Banteng,
elephants, Clouded Leopards, Orang-utans and Proboscis Monkeys, as well
as over 240 species of birds. Hornbills are particularly common at various
times of the year, especially during the fruiting season.
All tours from the lodge are led by qualified
naturalists who will be able to explain to you what it is you are looking
at, and should be able to answer most questions that you have about the
area. It is recommended that you spend at least two nights here to be able
to take in everything that the area has to offer. You will also be able
to visit an escarpment with an ancient burial coffin, and trek to rock
pools and waterfalls. The evenings also provide the opportunity to see
the nocturnal creatures in their native habitats; and should the weather
prove to be too inclement, there is a well stocked library, as well as
slide shows and videos. (Tour Code BRL1)
