Village
to obtain a first hand idea of the way of life in the villages and the
longhouses of the region, together with an insight into the arts and crafts,
including tribal dances of the various tribes. (Tour Code KCH2)
Spend a couple of days in the Batang Ai region of Sarawak exploring the wonderful scenery and taking in the diverse wildlife and vegetation. While you are there you could also visit a tribal village and spend the night in a longhouse, sharing life with the villagers (Tour Code BAI2), or alternatively, if an overnight stay in the longhouse is not quite what you have in mind, take a day trip up the river in a longboat to visit the Batang Ai National Park and also a longhouse or two, where you will also be able to share a meal and drinks with the villagers, and watch them perform local dances for your entertainment. (Tour Code BAI1)
Extended tours to Longhouses in the region are also
available from Batang Ai, including Ulu Ai, which is recognised
as one of the region's best examples of village based tourism. Longhouse
tours in this region can be arranged for periods of up to 5 Days/4 Nights.
(Tour Code KCHUL5) The lodge at Nanga Sumpa was made famous by Michael
Palin (of Monty Python fame) in his trip around the Pacific Rim.
At Ulu Ai, the accommodation is in a separate lodge to the village Longhouse, which provides simple, clean lodging with Western style toilets, mosquito netting, mattresses and clean linen. The meals are prepared in the lodge and feature fresh jungle vegetables and other local delicacies. Activities during your stay in the area include trekking or travelling by longboat up the river, visiting the longhouse and surrounding farms and participating in the daily activities of the Iban people. From Miri
For those with more time to spare while in Miri, continue on to Lambir Hill National Park, where you can enjoy lunch by one of the many cooling waterfalls and follow trails through the forest to discover why this is known as one of the richest rainforests in the world. (Tour Code MYY2)
The visit to the Wind Cave necessitates a trip up the river by longboat. In the Wind Cave can be found the impressive "King's Chamber", and some wonderful examples of stalactites and stalagmites exhibiting delicate lace like patterns. Clearwater Cave nearby is the home of a unique species of plant - the one leafed plant. Close to Clearwater Cave is a wonderful swimming area which is nicely shaded by giant rainforest trees, where you will be able to enjoy a lunch break. (Tour Code MZV2)

For the speleologists out there, we also offer some cave explorations to the Sarawak Chamber, which is the world's largest natural chamber; and a link between the Clearwater and Wind Caves which will include some swimming in underground river systems. Clearwater Cave is the longest cave in South-East Asia, and at 107 km, is the eighth longest cave system in the world. For all adventure trips such as the trekking and caving, you will be required to bring some of your own gear, such as sleeping bags, a good pair of gardening gloves (for good grip and protection against rough surfaces), a torch and small backpack. For caving trips, you will be provided with lamps and helmets. You will be issued with a comprehensive list of requirements on booking with us. Niah Caves - The caves are located close to the coast a couple of hours South of Miri, and are the site of the earliest habitation by man in South-East Asia. Some remnants of the habitation can still be seen. The caves also support bird nest collectors who collect the edible white birds nests formed by swiftlets which live in the cave, and which are used in the famous Chinese dish - "birds nest soup". A trip to the caves will take the best part of a day (Tour Code MYY3), and can also be taken with an overnight stay in the area (accommodation in a Park Hostel with dormitory style accommodation) which will enable you to see the spectacle of millions of bats departing the caves for their nightly feed.
